Professor Jen Ross, Inaugural Lecture, 10 June 2026
Professor Jen Ross, Inaugural Lecture, 10 June 2026
Professor Jen Ross's inaugural lecture reflects on her personal journey into digital education and uses it to explore how we might create better digital futures for learning. Drawing on two decades of research into online learning, MOOCs, museums, AI, surveillance, and speculative design, she argues that technology should not be accepted uncritically or judged solely by promises of efficiency, scale, or innovation. Instead, she advocates using speculative methods to imagine alternative futures, embracing glitches and uncertainty as opportunities for new thinking, and questioning dominant assumptions about technological abundance, constant access, and AI-driven automation. Through examples ranging from experimental teaching bots and museum projects to workshops with young people imagining AI futures, she makes the case for educational technologies that prioritise privacy, trust, sustainability, meaningful effort, and human relationships over convenience and surveillance. Ross concludes that, despite the many challenges facing universities and digital culture today, educators can continue to shape more ethical and inclusive futures by acting with integrity, openness, and care, even without certainty that those futures will be realised.
